How Do I Liquidate My Precious Metals?

Learn how to liquidate your precious metals, what is needed, whom you must contact, and how long the process will take.

Please contact your precious metals dealer to handle the liquidation. STRATA does not buy or sell metals directly.

Liquidation Process

Once you contact your precious metals dealer to handle the liquidation, and you both have decided on what to sell and the buyback amount, the broker-dealer will create an invoice on your IRA’s behalf. There are three items STRATA will need in order to process your liquidation request:

The broker-dealer processing the liquidation will need to provide the investor:

1. The client agreement

2. The purchase order/invoice 


The investor will need to provide STRATA: 

3. STRATA's Investment Direction and Disclosures - Precious Metals form. Keep in mind that the amount of liquidation on this form should match the amount on the purchase order/invoice provided by your broker. The investor will be prompted to upload the client agreement and the purchase order/invoice. 

How Long?

The approximate timeline for your liquidation request is dependent on which method you select (1) receiving precious metals, or (2) receiving a cash distribution. 

(1) Receiving Precious Metals - The typical total processing time is between 5-13 business days. STRATA will notify your current depository of the liquidation request and have the precious metals transferred to the appropriate location.

  • STRATA may take up to 3 business days to process your request.
  • Internal depository transfers can take up to 5 business days once the request is received by the depository from STRATA. 
  • Precious metals that are shipped from the depository to the dealer can take up to 5 business days once the request is received by the depository from STRATA.

(2) Receiving a Cash Distribution - If you are requesting cash then the investor will also need to fill out STRATA's IRA Distribution Request. Once STRATA receives the proceeds from the requested liquidation – the distribution will be processed within 24-48 hours as long as the distribution form is received and in good order. Expedite Distribution Requests – Update Your Contact Information Promptly

Whether you've recently changed residences or need to revise any contact information, keeping us informed is crucial for seamless account management and security. Your contact details and address information are utilized to confirm transactions and validate the authenticity of service requests. If there's a discrepancy between your contact information on file, processing delays may occur as we take extra steps to verify the information.

To update your contact information, simply fill out our Change of Address form. Once submitted, we'll swiftly process your request and notify you once the changes are finalized.
