How do I take an in-kind distribution from Texas Precious Metals Depository?

An in-kind distribution allows you to remove precious metals from your IRA without selling them. As part of the request, you will choose whether the metals are transferred to a personal storage account at Texas Precious Metals Depository (TPMD) or shipped directly to you.

Submit a distribution request

Complete the IRA Distribution Request form and select your delivery method. After STRATA receives your request, we will:

  • Verify your contact information on file

  • Collect the in-kind processing fee (see your STRATA Fee Schedule)

  • Provide your distribution instructions to Texas Precious Metals Depository for processing

Delivery options

The delivery options available are:

  • Transfer to a personal storage account
If you choose to store the metals in your personal account at TPMD, the depository will move the metals accordingly.

Estimated processing time: up to 5 business days

  • Ship metals to you
    If you choose physical delivery:

    • TPMD will calculate shipping fees and contact you by phone within 2–3 business days to collect payment by credit card

    • Once the shipping label is created, you will receive tracking information from UPS

    • An adult signature (18+) is required upon delivery

    • Delivery times may vary during peak shipping periods

Important Information

  • Updates: If you have any questions or concerns regarding your package after you receive your email from UPS, please reach out to TPMD at TexasDepository.com or (361) 594-3624.
  • Claims: You must contact STRATA within 7 days of receipt of your precious metals to dispute or report any claims on the shipment.

Tax reporting

STRATA reports all IRA distributions to the IRS.

You will receive Form 1099-R by January 31 of the year following the distribution.
The value reported reflects the fair market value of the metals on the date the distribution was processed by TPMD.
