How do I change an IRA contribution from one IRA type to another?

This process is called a recharacterization. Use STRATA's IRA Recharacterization Request form to recharacterize an eligible IRA contribution from one IRA type to another, such as from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA or vice versa.

Please note:

  • Only IRA contributions may be recharacterized
  • Beginning with tax year 2018, Roth conversions can no longer be recharacterized under IRS rules
  • Partial or full Roth conversions are permanent transactions

Because recharacterizations and conversions may have tax consequences, always consult a qualified tax professional regarding your specific situation.
