How Are RMDs Handled After the Account Owner Has Passed Away?
If the RMD is taken the year of the account owner's death, and the RMD was not taken prior to death, the RMD must be taken out of the IRA by April 1 of the year preceding death using the account owner’s life expectancy factor. The RMD can be withdrawn from the IRA by using the IRA Distribution Form (links below).
If the RMD is taken the year following the account owner's death, the RMD must be taken by December 31st of that year, and the amount will be based upon the designated beneficiary’s life expectancy factor or trust life expectancy factor. Please note, STRATA Trust does not handle calculations for any beneficiary or trust as beneficiary. The RMD can be withdrawn from the IRA by using the IRA Distribution Form (links below).
