What happens to RMDs when an IRA owner passes away?
If the account owner passes away before taking their full Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, any remaining RMD amount generally must be distributed to the beneficiary before the applicable IRS deadline.
The rules governing beneficiary RMDs can vary based on factors such as the type of beneficiary, whether a trust is named as beneficiary, and when the account owner passed away.
STRATA does not calculate RMD amounts for beneficiaries, inherited IRAs, or trusts named as beneficiaries. If you are a beneficiary, we recommend working with a qualified tax professional or financial advisor to determine any required distributions and applicable deadlines.
To request a distribution from an inherited IRA, submit STRATA's IRA Distribution Request form.
